10 Days of Teshuvah at Congregation Shaare Emeth
There are ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a sacred stretch of time referred to as the Ten Days of Teshuvah (Repentance). These ten days are seen by many Jews as an opportunity for change through repentance, prayer, and charity. The famous religious poem, Unetanah tokef, describes the opportunity to “avert the severe decree” by changing our minds, feeling regret and a determination to improve, and making an effort to repair our misdeeds.
However you choose to spend these ten days, we sincerely hope they are restorative and renewing. Here are a few opportunities to take part in communal rituals to enhance your spiritual journey.
Shabbat Shuvah
Shabbat Shuvah falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Shuvah comes from the Hebrew word “Teshuvah,” which is often translated as repentance but literally means “return.” Thus, Shabbat Shuvah is the Sabbath of Return. Our service is focused and meditative, highlighting themes of repentance and forgiveness.
